Creativity is a means through which the universe comes to know itself
Carl Sagan once wrote “We are a way for the universe to know itself”. I interpret “We” as “human consciousness”, and “know itself” as “understand it’s own nature”. Through each of us, the universe is trying to understand it’s true nature. An inherent part of the universe’s nature is creativity. About 13.8 billion years ago, our universe came into existence with a Big Bang. Since then it has expressed creativity in a multitude of ways. It formed stars, which then formed planets. It began playing the music of gravity to which the planets and stars dance. 3.5 billion years ago, it manifested conscious life, at least on this planet. Conscious life evolved from a single cellular organism to the complex being that now reads this article. The same matter that was once part of a tiny dense ball at the beginning of time, is what our bodies are formed from. Through our ability to understand the process leading to our creation, we come to understand that the creative process is part of our universe’s nature.
It is not a stretch to say that our existence presupposes creativity, albeit coincidental and random. Our species came into existence roughly 200,000 years ago. Since then, our species has procreated for thousands of generations. The product of this procreation looks out through our very own eyes. In understanding our biological procreation, we understand how the creative process is augmented by combinatory power. The ability to bring things together in order to create something new is part of our universe’s nature. It has done this for billions of years and it will keep doing so.
The creative process that led to us being here, is the same process we can manifest. Our creativity is our ability to take what we have experienced, combine it with another experience and channel it. This combinatory creative process is something that the universe has expressed as part of it’s nature. It has shown the ability to bring matter together to create something new that didn’t previously exist in its current form. Therefore by channeling the creative process, each of us can channel an ability that represents the very fabric of our cosmos. The ability to create by combining.
In the aftermath of our creative outlet, our conscious nature meets it’s unconscious twin. We look upon our creation and behold the process that allowed us to channel the very same ability that our universe unconsciously harnessed in creating us. In an unimaginably large universe, the possibility of creativity exists. However, when we behold our own creativity, we turn that possibility into conscious reality. The universe is now able to channel it’s creative ability consciously. We are it’s vessel.
If we recognise this, then it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to express our creativity. To take our experiences, combine them, and express them in whatever form of expression suits us. For me this creativity expresses itself through writing, playing sport, playing chess, playing poker, and through my work. For you these forms of expression will likely be different. What is important is that you recognise and consciously make time in your day to give your experiences a form of expression. To deny our creativity is to deny the universe an opportunity to realise it’s own nature.
The latest scientific research has shown a link between creativity and positive emotion. It is not a stretch to say that we are happier when we are being creative. It harkens to a harmonius symbiosis between us an the universe. So I leave you with a philosophical hypothesis:
The happiness that we experience in the aftermath of our creativity is a signal. It is a signal indicating that creativity is a means through which the universe comes to know itself.
